For me this work by Micha Cardenas is just so amazing. She deals with so much of what I have been in a round-a-bout way exploring. This work is so technologically advanced and contains many layers of functionality and depth. Love it.
I see this work as an exploration of borders and barriers that exist both within our everyday lives and our online or second lives. Her extension of the requirement to have spent a year living as a woman before being eligible for transgender surgery is fascinating in terms of the questions it raises.
What does it mean to inhabit a body, physical or virtual? Where does one body end and another begin? Can we translate our physical desires into virtual desires. Can we fulfil our identities though transformation in both RL and SL ? Can we distinguish RL and SL anyway!?
What does it mean to transcend physicality through virtuality?
Her transition into another form is both symbolic of and challenging to the very notion of embodiment.
